While the holidays can bring fun and light into your life, there is a certain level of stress surrounding these couple of months that can cause you to feel anxious or disconnected. Everyone seems to have elevated energy levels as well, leading to a shift in the way everyone interacts during this time.
In order to understand grounding, we must first dive into energy. Energy is all around us whether we see it or not. It plays a part in nature, the way our bodies function, and in the air we breathe every day. Sometimes we can see energy transforming right before our eyes in the form of lighting, the sun heating the earth, or the powerful waves in the ocean – it can be a beautiful process or disaster can strike.
Humans, or more specifically empaths, have a tendency to notice the energy around them more than others do. Empaths can feel tension in a room, they can typically see through dishonesty, and they take on others’ feelings as their own much of the time. Empaths absorb others’ energy, just like a tree absorbs lightning or a flower absorbs sunlight. There are pros and cons to this, just as there are pros and cons to energy within nature. A strike of lightning can set a house on fire and a person with negative energy can drain everyone in the room. On the other hand, a person with great energy and light can fill everyone in a room with joy. Energy is infinite and always in motion, which is why learning to practice grounding is so crucial.
As you get into the full swing of the holiday season, you’ll notice an increase in people who are stressed out and exuding negative energy. The cashier at the store might be unkind to you. Someone might cut you off in traffic. The family members you only see a few times a year might be giving out bad vibes. This energy is all out of your control, but what you do with that energy is in your control. And as you practice grounding during this time, you will notice yourself becoming less and less affected by the negative energy surrounding you.
What is Grounding?
According to Healthline, “Grounding, also called earthing, is a therapeutic technique that involves doing activities that “ground” or electrically reconnect you to the earth. This practice relies on earthing science and grounding physics to explain how electrical charges from the earth can have positive effects on your body.” The earth has healing energy that can improve your emotional and physical well being in good and bad times. In essence, grounding can help you release built-up energy, but it can also assist in dealing with negative or challenging emotions.
How Does it Work?
The first thing you’ll want to do is remove your shoes and socks so you can really connect with the earth. Walk outside and take a few moments to just feel the earth below your feet. If you can, stand in grass or dirt. Next, feel the earth below you. Take a few moments to steady your breath, and once you do, you can start breathing deeply – inhaling and exhaling as you feel the ground. Next, allow yourself to move away from your body and visualize yourself standing there connecting with the earth. Picture roots forming at the bottom of your feet, and with each breath, allow those roots to move deeper into the earth – releasing any energy that isn’t serving you.
This is a great technique to practice when you are feeling overwhelmed, not feeling like yourself, or you need to come back to reality and be present. It’s easy to incorporate this technique even when you’re on the go. Simply step into a bathroom, sit in your car, or find a park bench to meditate on while you come back to yourself and reconnect with the earth. I have recorded a grounding meditation to listen to while you do this practice, and if you can commit to doing it for two minutes a day, it can change your life. It is infused with Binaural Sounds at 396 Hertz, which helps liberate you from unused energy including fear and guilt.
When you feel as though the energy around you isn’t really yours, take the steps above to come back to reality and get your energy back in balance. Life is too short to feel anxious, stressed, and off balance, and spending two minutes every day with this meditation can help you stay grounded and connected with the earth.
Try it for the next seven days. I can guarantee that you’ll start to feel happier and you’ll be able to enjoy this upcoming holiday season more than you would have previously.
