What is a Spiritual Awakening and What to Expect: Why awakening feels confusing, freeing, and strangely familiar and how to know if it’s happening to you.

A spiritual awakening doesn’t arrive with angels singing or a big dramatic sign. Most of the time, it begins quietly. Something shifts inside you. Something feels off. Something feels different. You can’t explain it, but you feel it. It’s like you finally start seeing yourself - and the world - with honest, unfiltered eyes.
A spiritual awakening is the moment you begin seeing your life with real honesty, not the old stories you inherited - and you can’t go back to who you were pretending to be.
My own awakening began when I was 18. I had just graduated from high school, spent the summer traveling, and came home feeling completely disconnected from the “normal” college life everyone around me seemed excited about. Everyone else was trying to date and sneak alcohol into parties. Meanwhile, I was trying to figure out the meaning of life and wondering why Spirit was always around me. It’s hard to blend in when your intuition is louder than the people around you.
Growing up, I always felt different. I saw things, sensed things, and asked questions adults didn’t know how to answer - especially in Catholic classes. Being closeted during the AIDS epidemic added another layer of fear and hiding. I was trying to bury my identity and my spirituality at the same time. That closet had no room left. I was so deep in the closet I’m surprised Narnia didn’t show up at some point. Eventually the Universe gave me the look that says, “Sweetheart… enough.”
And then one day, my life shifted. Back in the 90s, we didn’t call them metaphysical shops. We called them occult bookstores, which basically meant “Enter at your own risk.” Naturally, I walked right in - announcing I was here. That’s where I met the owner, who later became one of my mentors. She taught me how to let go of my anxiety, the importance of meditation - which at the time felt like advanced science because I could barely sit still for 20 seconds - and how to hear my intuition without running from it. That was when I realized a spiritual awakening isn’t a performance. It’s a return to the truth you’ve been carrying all along.
The hardest part of awakening isn’t the intuition - it’s the honesty.
You start seeing your patterns.
The old trauma you’ve been carrying.
The ways you learned to shrink or stay quiet just to survive.
The people-pleasing.
The fear.
You realize how much of your life was shaped by moments that hurt you more than you realized. And somehow, even though it’s uncomfortable, everything starts to make sense.
You begin noticing how much of your life was built on survival instead of authenticity. And you start questioning everything you were taught was “the right way.” It’s uncomfortable, but it’s also liberating. Awakening helps you see things clearly - not through fear, not through guilt, not through who you were told you should be.
And in that clarity, something beautiful happens:
I remember the first time I realized I wasn’t wrong for feeling different - I was finally seeing the truth I had ignored for years. I was perfect exactly as I am. That moment changed everything.
But let’s be real - spiritual awakening isn’t all love, light, and high vibes. It’s often messy. Lonely. Confusing. It’s the moment the Universe taps your shoulder… then pushes you off the chair when you ignore it. People fall away. Old identities crumble. You feel like you’re walking through your life without the old numbing agents or distractions. You are awake now - and life hits differently. If you’re wondering whether you are in your own awakening, here are a few questions to sit with:
• Do I feel like I’m outgrowing parts of my life that once felt normal?
• Am I craving more honesty, peace, or meaning in my day-to-day life?
• Do certain relationships feel heavier than I realized?
• Am I questioning things I was raised to believe were the “right” way to live?
• Am I noticing I no longer tolerate what I used to simply accept?
• Do I feel something shifting inside me - even if I can’t explain it yet?
Awakening isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about remembering the person you were before life layered you with fear, expectations, and survival patterns. When those layers fall away, you don’t lose yourself - you find yourself, your true authentic self.
And in that process…
You let go of what weighs you down.
You build relationships that are real.
You stop choosing fear and start choosing what feels true.
You begin living a life that finally feels like yours.
And guess what - you begin trusting your intuition.
A Course in Miracles teaches this in a simple way: the moment you choose love instead of fear, even internally, you’re waking up. Not in a dramatic, mystical way but in a quiet, steady “I’m ready to live differently now” way. That shift is everything.
So if you find yourself questioning, craving, searching, or shedding - you are not lost.

You’re waking up.
And if you are in the thick of it, here are a few gentle practices to support your awakening:
• Take five minutes a day to sit quietly and breathe. No pressure. Just presence.
• Journal what feels true for you - not what you think you should feel.
• Notice when fear is making decisions for you.
• If you catch your mind pulling you back into an old trauma or story, pause and ask, “Is this happening now, or is this my past trying to protect me?”
• Let yourself outgrow what no longer supports who you’re becoming.
• Follow the small intuitive nudges - they’re never random.
Awakening isn’t the end of your life as you know it.
It’s the beginning of the life you were always meant to live.
If this resonates and you feel like you’re in your own awakening, you don’t have to walk through it alone. My work is rooted in helping people move from fear to truth, from confusion to clarity, and from survival mode into a life that actually feels like theirs.
